Da vinci write up- Real social networks

This one I have charted out on back of one of my visiting card.

You will notice that there is not much of detailing done; yet some of the ways in which I intend to branch out my family (deemed) company called inkoli.com. You can also see my private visiting card (below):

I wanted to present myself as associated with social networking (and more than that).However, in the recent times, the social networks have acquired a sort of bad name. By social networks I meant groups of people working together in attending to some problem; or simply enjoying their common interests.
I have now realised that what I wanted to create was social networks that are real and not virtual. I am yet to finalise the issue, but soon I shall work in the direction of starting groups or networks of people who will get a chance to gather together in flesh and blood. It's a dream but it is certainly attainable.
My visiting card then will present me as conncted with ' The Real Networks'.

Analysis Paralysis

Personally, I liked the phrase- Analysis Paralysis, and hence thought of elaborating the same.

Analysis paralysis is an informal phrase applied to when the opportunity cost of decision analysis exceeds the benefits(From Wikipedia).

Analysis paralysis applies to any situation where analysis may be applied to help make a decision and may be a dysfunctional element of organizational behavior.

What it means, in layman's term, is that many times people keep on analysing the situations and in the process decision is delayed, which acts as hinderance to further steps involved in the process. The process gets delayed, and it may get abandoned also.

One can say that although we need to annalyse a situation, there should be a limit to it and we need to take a clear stance (and a decision)which may prove to be incorrect also.In this aspect it can be said that many times a decision taken proves to be a wrong many times we have time for correcting the same if the earlier decision has been taken promptly.

This applies to many situations in life and one has to be careful enough to see that analysis paralysis does not make the whole process dysfunctional.

find more about careers @

As Barbara has mentioned in her book, one should go to various places to find out more about careers and jobs that may be suitable (and open) for the Scanners.

In the past also I had thought on similar lines, but it wasn't exactly for finding opportunities but purely as a fun involving creativity: wanted to record conversations, take photographs/videos that can showcase current trends in various issues including fashion,jobs,opportunities,new fields,new lifestyles,work practices etc.

What one can do is to disguise to find more about careers,jobs; ways of life/work by visiting:

1. Bars/pubs- by far the best places to find young people discussing fashions,new academic programs,girls,companies,latest in computers,blogs,etc.

You will also find there different people at different times: during non-peak hours you will find government/municipal employees enjoying drinks during their working hours and that too probably at the cost of some contractor,supplier or agent.What you can learn from them is which postings are hot (moneywise) and carry weight.

In afternoons, at lunch time, you will find company managers treating their clients ( and at the same time they themselves spiriting their spirit with spirits).You will also find employees from IT & ITES firms frequenting bars/pubs and if you are attentive enough you will notice end of a shift in some BPO/call centre.Families visit bars & restaurants mostly in evening and their conversation would most probably be boring.

2. Schools- are the places where you can survey profile of the parents;however, in India, where competition is so stiff, don't expect any help from them too early. You will need to go the school regularly for acquaintances.

3. PTA (Parent Teachers Association) of the school- one can join in PTA for active work and chances are good that other parents may help you with a suitable information if you are a PTA member (on panel of PTA).

4. Visit workplaces- one can visit workplaces of your friends to make acquaintances and networking; this is a sure way of getting more information on current openings; as a dessert you can win a girlfriend there at friend's workplace.

5. Garden/jogging parks- agian this is a great place to frequent where you will get to know people in different age-groups.You need to find an elderly looking vice-president of a company and then offer him lot of services (commonly called buttering)before he will think of offering you a job.

There could be many more places that can be visited which I would like to hear from readers.

Find opportunity to :

You need to search for opportunities that will benefit you in self-development, I mean developing your soft-skills including public speaking,communication skills,organisational skills.

One should look for the following opportunities:

# volunteering

You can get volunteering opportunities in your local community, workplaces or social organisations. Actually, such opportunities keep on coming frequently but generally many are reluctant to seize it and only want to associate themselves with opportunities that are connected with good positions.But the fact of the life is that it is through your general voluteering only masses recognise you which may pave your wayt to higher positions.

# speaking at functions,events including introducing guest speakers,vote of thanks

the function could even be a funeral service leave alone some happy events.The whole purpose is to get more and more confidence and also increasing your own visibility.

# maintaining website for your group or club

the job is challenging, you learn a lot about the whole process of website administration. You also get a chance to know about the people who are visiting your website and can develop this aspect in turning it into an oportunity for yourself.

# attending to secretarial work of a group/club/society

it is the secretary who attend to all compliace matteras and in the process learns a lot of the whole business, more so the contacts and this could turn out to be your take-off point.

# organising events

this aspect infact will combine all the works/opportunities discussed above. For organising an event you have to learn basics of the event,call upon the experts or out-source stuff/people in presenting a complete product/scheme (as an event) before invitees.Here you will be able to test your mettle also in knowing if people like what you did.

Cleaning Act

Scanners are surrounded by clutter. It is time that we start uncluttering our own life and thus hope to be more in control of many of our interests.Whether that will be possible for Scanner is a question.

I have decided to do the following:

  1. clean the study
  2. Arrange the study
  3. Arrange/organise and update financial records/papers
  4. Write a letter (send a querry) to at least one company to solve (pending) problems with their stocks and other financial obligations.
  5. Clean and arrange the cupboards/closets.

Shall keep in posting about progress.

Jobs/vocations for Scanners

While reading the book I was thinking as to what jobs could best be suited for Scanners.As Barbara Sher has been telling us that Scanners are brilliant, intelligent, and are capable to handling any work.But as we have leared that they get easily bored by repetativeness of the work involving one field only, I suggest the following list of fields that the Scanners can look for.

They are jobs/careers involving:

general work;
multidisciplinary work;
consulting;
speaker-motivational/inspiration;
a life-style experiencer;
media;
politics;
explorer

Degrees/diplomas attended

Barbara Sher says that the Scanners take interest in many subjects but they fail to carry on for a long in many of them.

True to the spirit of scanner, I had enrolled for many academic programs, let's talk about degree/diplomas, spending a lot of money (and time) but later found no inclination to complete many of them. As a scanner I tasted them and then (possibly) my interest in them would have diminished.

The purpose of this Blog

18th March 2007 would remain as a day to remember in my life.

I happened to go to Nirmal LifeStyle, a mall in Mulund,Mumbai,INDIA. After having done window shopping I went to CrossRoad, a premier book-shop chain in India, in the mall. I was looking for some books on general management. I came across a book called "WHAT DO I DO WHEN I WANT TO DO EVERYTHING?". Interesting, I thought; I went through back cover and inside cover. Well, the reading through few pages convinced me that it had touched me- it was echoing my feelings.

The book is about kind of people who want to do or learn many things in their life. Unlike concentrating on a single subject or speciality, as the most of the people do, this category of people have many passions. They seem to go after them pursuing their interests but are also known to abandon many of these projects; yet such people have a terrific liking for learning everything on the earth. Such people have been called as Scanners by the author Ms. Barbara Sher. Yes, I have always felt doing many things and also given up most of them.

I bought the book. I sincerely believed that it will help me understand myself, a Scanner in me, and also look forward to getting many tips in making good use of many abilities that Scanners do possess.

It seems that the book has a lot of assignments for Scanners.I have decided to take it as a journey and shall share my assignments in this blog, as I go through the book, so that other Scanners will come forward to share their experiences.

Please visit this place again and again as the story is unfolded / evolved.
